The Last O.G. debuted last night on TBS. I can’t remember the last time I made sure to park myself on the couch to watch a TV show. I understand binge watching, since it’s on my terms.
But destination television? TV Guide made a deal with Cambridge Analytica and I approve!
I love where the show begins. 15 years ago, Tracy Morgan got busted. The show opens with him at the end of his prison sentence, an accomplished chef, the most popular guy in prison. He goes back to where he’s from, Brooklyn. But things have changed. Instead of standing on the corner waiting on drugs, we see black men standing on the corner waiting on a ride to brunch. And they’re gay, openly gay.
“What’s happened to Brooklyn?” Tracy shouts. It’s moved on from him, much like his girlfriend played by Tiffany Haddish. She’s amazing, by the way. I’d like to formally nominate Tiffany Haddish for America’s Sweetheart. Is there anything she can’t do? The answer is no.
Jordan Peele had a hand in the creation of The Last O.G. First Key & Peele, then Get Out, now this. The Ghost Of Richard Pryor is looking down, laughing his ass off.
I think the best way for me to describe the power of what’s happening right in front of my eyes can best be described by talking about Roseanne as seen through the filter of Parks & Rec.
I don’t wanna watch Roseanne. But I’m gonna watch Roseanne, it’s obligation television. First of all, John Goodman is on the show. I’d watch John Goodman do anything. If he can make a one-eyed Bible salesman loveable, then I can see him loving a bigot. Make no mistake, Roseanne Barr is a bigot. Anyone who supports Donald Trump is a bigot and the underlying problem with their bigotry is the extent to which the hatred has been left to rot in the soul of the un-self-examined. But I’ll watch the show. I owe it to myself. I need to laugh, if not with them, at them.
So fuck it.
Currently, I’m half way through the 7th season of Parks & Rec. I’m binge watching. I love the show with my whole heart. I love Leslie Knope. I love Ron Swanson. Their friendship is one for the ages. I’m kicking myself for missing this show when it was happening even though in my small world, it’s happening right now. But it’s not the same thing and I know it’s not the same thing because as I was racing to my couch last night to catch The Last O.G. I could feel what it’s like to watch something unfold right in front of my eyes. It was exciting, like seeing a comic on stage you’ve never seen before kill, or a band at an open mic slay the room, or Tracy Morgan back from the dead, literally.
I have no idea what’s going to happen next. I have no idea if The Last O.G. is going to last. But I get the feeling Tracy Morgan is going to be just fine. If he can make himself that popular in prison, he can make it on TBS.
